Senior Java Developer/ Technical Lead Digital Publishing

To support the Digital Publishing programme, the Technology Group is looking to recruit a Senior Java Developer/Technical Lead to work with the existing programme. In this role, the successful candidate will manage and lead a small team of developers and assist non-technical colleagues in definition, design and implementation of the FT Digital Publishing Programme, liaising between 3rd parties, partners and business and technical stakeholders.

The Senior Java Developer/Technical Lead will assist t he development team, answering queries and providing the detail they need to plan and deliver initiatives within the Digital Publishing programme. In support of the planning process, the individual will provide estimates and contribute to resource allocation and prioritisation discussions.

Part of the role will involve working with the QA function to develop a repeatable, end-to-end testing process for Digital Publishing to validate changes and form a regression test suite to identify errors and omissions introduced either as direct result of Digital Publishing development or as a side effect of other development work.



Senior Java Developer/Technical Lead Responsibilities include:

Provide technical leadership and direction across Technology and the business

Ensure solutions are in line with the FT technology strategy, evident through communicable technical roadmaps

Ensure technical debt is managed effectively
Participate in a peer group of Programme Technical Leads for the purposes of group design and knowledge sharing

Line management responsibilities for a team of Developers to include day to day programme support and guidance and performance reviews

Help to define and submit the programme business case(s) for funding approval

Ensure inter-programme dependencies are identified and tracked

Develop and foster knowledge and skills transfer, to remove key person dependencies

Work as part of an Agile team implementing software development best practices


Skills & Experience

Essential:

University degree, preferably educated in the field of Computer Science/Engineering/Information Systems

Minimum of 2 years of engineering at a Senior level

A very strong background in common web programming technologies with significant exposure to:

o Java, J2E E, Spring

o JavaScript and AJAX, HTML 4/5

Good working knowledge of HTTP/1.1

Significant experience in Content Management Systems, ideally Java/J2EE-based

Relational Database experience, especially MySQL

Background in Test Driven Development

A thorough understanding of Agile Scrum development and delivery

Exposure to multivariate testing, optimisation and personalisation tools

Desirable:

o Exposure to high transactional systems

o Exposure to media / editorial workflow and publishing systems - HIGHLY desirable
