About the Business
CH2M HILL, in association with Halcrow, is working with Thames Water, the UK's largest water company, to develop the London Tideway Tunnels.

Two major new tunnels are needed to substantially reduce the volume of untreated sewage overflowing from Londons Victorian sewers into the River Thames estimated to be approximately 39 million cubic metres in an average year (enough to fill the Royal Albert Hall 450 times) and up to three times more in wetter years.

Required to help ensure the UK complies with Urban Wastewater Treatment Directive, the tunnels will make the River Thames and its tributary the River Lee cleaner and healthier for wildlife and for people.

T he deepest tunnels ever constructed in the capital (up to 75m beneath ground level), the diameter of both the tunnels will be wider than three London buses placed side by side.

Starting in west London and broadly following the path of the River Thames through the centre of the capital, the Thames Tunnel is proposed to transfer the flows from the 34 most-polluting Combined Sewer Overflows(CSOs) to Beckton Sewage Treatment Works (STW) in the east of the city. Construction is due to commence in 2012/13, for completion in 2020.

The shorter (7km) Lee Tunnel will eliminate some 16 million cubic metres of sewage from being discharged to the River Lee from Abbey Mills Pumping Station Stratford. Flow from the Lee Tunnel will also be processed at Beckton STW. Starting in spring 2010, construction is expected to be complete by 2014.

Together the Lee and Thames Tunnels will be one of the most challenging engineering feats ever undertaken in modern-day London. They will have a combined capacity of 1.6 million cubic metres.
