Senior Legal Adviser

The future of regulation is taking shape

The Solicitors Regulation Authority sets professional standards for solicitors in England and Wales and regulates solicitors, their law practices and staff in the public interest. It is also a licensing body for alternative business structures.

Our Legal and Enforcement team deals with proceedings before the Solicitors Disciplinary Tribunal, the High Court and other civil and criminal courts. It also delivers advice on legal and evidential matters to other functions across the organisation. Your role will involve providing high quality advice on your own matters, developing case strategy in complex or multiple cases and mentoring and coaching other team members. Proactivity is important in maintaining an overview of your own matters and those conducted by colleagues in order to ensure consistency of approach and coordination.

As a Senior Legal Adviser, you may be required to make formal decisions upon evidential and public interest tests. Where you become involved in conducting disciplinary or other proceedings, you will need to act in the public interest on an outcomes-focused and regulatory risk basis. You may be required to conduct proceedings yourself or instruct external lawyers and work closely with them.

A qualified solicitor or barrister, you will have experience of substantial litigation in private practice or providing high quality legal advice in a regulatory environment and a knowledge of the Solicitors Act 1974 and the SRA Handbook. Excellent drafting and analytical skills are key, as is the ability to communicate effectively at senior levels and to take accountability for the successful resolution of very complex issues.
